Danya Recognizes World Cancer Day on February 4, 2007 Urges Teens and Parents to Quit Smoking to Help Prevent Cancer Later in Life Silver Spring, Maryland (February 2, 2007) – Danya International, Inc. (Danya), a health communications, research, and technology firm delivering breakthrough solutions for public health and education, recognizes World Cancer Day on February 4, 2007. Cancer prevention is the focus of the 2007–2008 World Cancer Campaign to launch on World Cancer Day by the Geneva-based International Union Against Cancer (UICC). The campaign encourages parents to make lifestyle changes today—such as providing a smoke-free environment—to shape a healthier tomorrow’s world for their children. Danya has played an integral role in several tobacco control and prevention initiatives, including the development of the Adolescent Smoking Cessation Escaping Nicotine and Tobacco (ASCENT) program to help teens ages 14–18 stop smoking. Danya also offers two online resources, www.teenquit.com for teens and Dr. Jeff’s Quit Commit Program for Smoking Cessation at www.quitcommit.com for adults. ASCENT and the Web sites provide research-based, age-appropriate interactive tools and quit smoking plans to help smokers conquer their nicotine addiction. For tobacco prevention and control professionals, voluntary health organizations, private entities, and the public, Danya developed a Web-based Tobacco Knowledge Management System, www.kNOwtobacco.net, to connect individuals, information, and ideas for tobacco control. In addition, Danya is organizing the 2007 National Conference on Tobacco or Health to be held October 24–26, 2007, in Minneapolis to help improve and sustain the effectiveness and reach of the U.S. tobacco control program and activities focused on prevention, cessation, and research. Registration information is available at www.tobaccocontrolconference.org. "In the U.S., smoking is viewed as the most preventable cause of death," said Jeff Hoffman, Ph.D., President and CEO. "Teens are starting to smoke earlier and becoming addicted faster than ever. The average teenage smoker starts smoking between 11 and 12 years of age and becomes a daily smoker before age 18. Parents can set a healthy example for their children by quitting smoking today, while reducing their risk and their children’s risk of cancer later in life." According to the UICC, up to 30 percent of all cancer deaths are due to tobacco use, and reducing tobacco consumption in half now would save at least 170 million lives by 2050. "The bottom line is to make the commitment to quit smoking, prepare yourself, take action, and stick to your plan," said Hoffman. "If you fail your first attempt or second or third, adjust your plan and try again. If you are committed, you can do it." About Danya International, Inc.
