Danya Plays Integral Role in Ongoing Strategy to Address Gender Inequity and Empower Women in Agribusiness in Ethiopia
Silver Spring, Maryland (February 11, 2015)—As a subcontractor on the USAID/Agricultural Growth Program-Agribusiness Market Development (AGP-AMDe) project, Danya International, Inc. (Danya), a communications, research, and technology firm, was proud to lead a behavior change communications (BCC) campaign from March to December 2014, encouraging women to join farmers' cooperatives in Ethiopia to promote gender equality.
Danya's BCC staff designed and implemented an intensive multi-lingual BCC strategy that reached more than 200,000 farmers, cooperatives, union management members, and regional and zonal government officials. The result of this concentrated outreach has been that more than 78,000 women have been registered as new cooperative members, as reported by the official government reports. AGP-AMDe also is verifying each registrant by name and has confirmed more than 42,000 to date.
Thanks to the success of this collaborative outreach campaign, USAID AGP-AMDe recently presented awards to 16 farmers' cooperatives and 3 cooperative unions, who all made tremendous effort to promote inclusion of women farmers in cooperatives across the country. The ceremony, opened by Ethiopia First Lady Roman Tesfaye and U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Patricia Haslach, also celebrated the graduation of 100 women entrepreneurs from the Women in Agribusiness Leadership Network.
