Danya Develops New Online Course on Co-Occurring Disorders

Silver Spring, Maryland (September 24, 2009)—Clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders often have complex problems, challenges, and barriers. Maintaining a therapeutic alliance is important—and can be difficult because of these challenges. To help addiction counselors meet these challenges, Danya International, Inc. (Danya), developed the online course Helping Clients with Co-Occurring Disorders. It provides clinical guidelines for developing and maintaining successful therapeutic relationships and clinical techniques that enhance the effectiveness of working with clients who have co-occurring disorders.

After completing the course, counselors will be able to: (1) understand and describe seven clinical guidelines for developing and maintaining successful therapeutic relationships with clients who have co-occurring disorders, (2) understand and describe six clinical techniques that enhance the effectiveness of working with these clients, and (3) incorporate clinical guidelines and techniques shown to be effective with such clients.

The course is at the Danya Learning Center (www.DanyaLearningCenter.com), an online continuing education resource for healthcare professionals. It was developed by Danya with funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and written by Mim Landry, a Senior Public Health Analyst at Danya. The course, which costs $20, is sponsored by the Danya Institute, which manages the Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center. The activity has been approved by NAADAC, the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, for up to 1.5 credit hours under the Danya Institute’s Provider Number 309.

“Creating and maintaining therapeutic alliances with clients who have co-occurring disorders can be challenging,” explained Dr. Jeffrey Hoffman, Chief Executive Officer of Danya. “We designed this online course to help addiction counselors build therapeutic alliances and improving outcomes in the treatment of clients with co-occurring disorders.”
